This is for a systems engineering (SE) position in the Systems Engineering, Integration and Test (SEIT) team. As a member of this SEIT team, Systems Safety engineer ensures compliance with required regulations, procedures and policies with primary focus on aviation. The ideal candidate will seamlessly coordinate across multiple Integrated Product Teams (IPTs), ensuring continued safe operations of the Aircraft and Systems. Facilitates identification of safety and environmental risks and promotes reduction or elimination of potential accidents, occupational injuries, illnesses, deaths and safety-related financial losses. Systems safety engineers leads, develop, administer, and enforce regulations and standards concerning aviation safety, including (1) the airworthiness of aircraft and aircraft systems, (2) the competence of pilots, mechanics, and other airmen personnel, and (3) safety aspects of aviation facilities, equipment and procedures. This position requires knowledge and skill in the Development, operation, maintenance or manufacture of aircraft and aircraft systems.

This position provides consultation and technical direction to design teams and management teams on near term and longer-range projects relative to System safety requirements and risk estimation and management, including applicable regulations and standards.

Job Description:

Position Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrate expert domain knowledge in two or more Avionics systems namely, … Flight Management System, Displays System, high-integrity Radio and Communication, SATCOM, Flight Controls systems, or other airplane systems
  • Perform systematic and comprehensive assessments on system architecture, integrated design, Hardware/software, support equipment, installation of subsystems and experiments to ensure relevant safety requirements are met.
  • Coordinate and collaborate across stakeholders (Engineering, Environmental Safety and Health, technicians, quality, leadership, and customers) to ensure safety is integral to all activities and operations.
  • Analyze Aircraft and its Systems functions within design to identify linkages on which to base System safety criticality.
  • Sustain and support the development of System Safety planning, requirements, analysis tools and data packages.
  • Leads Engineering teams to conduct Fault Tree Analysis, Failure Mode Effects Cause Analysis, Safety Assessment Reports, SAE ARP 4761 and 4754A, Mil Std 882 System Safety Programs and risk assessment process, Reliability, Testability (RAMS FMECA), Safety Analysis.
  • Performs aircraft level ARP4761 Systems Safety Analysis, Fault Hazard analysis
  • Creates Systems level artifacts and logical decomposition of the whole system

  • Reviews and Qual stage gate technical artefacts
  • Review engineering design specifications, test operations procedures, change proposals, deficiency reports, exceptions and/or deviation/waiver requests for potential flight/ground test safety impacts.
  • Participate in incident investigations and root cause/corrective action analyses as requested
  • Support preparation of presentations, analyses and reports for customer and safety review boards, System Safety Working Groups (SSWGs) and program design.
  • Perform systematic and comprehensive assessment of in-service safety to ensure consistency with MIL-STD-882E.
  • Document efforts of hazard analysis and risk assessments (e.g. safety assessment reports, hazard notification and hazardous material reports), analysis and control of hardware, software and chemical hazards.
  • Organize, plan, implement and monitor requirements, management processes, tools, risk, issues, opportunity management and technology readiness assessment processes.
  • Resolve multi-functional technical issues.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry with  15 or more years' experience, Master's with 13 or more years' experience or PhD with 11 or more years' experience with aerospace System Safety Engineering requirements, design and analysis
  • Experience integrating multiple systems into aircraft platforms including safety requirements development and associated hazard analyses.
  • Experience with Aircraft systems integration activities Ability to perform a variety of hazard analyses across the full product life cycle to include Preliminary Hazard Analysis (PHA), Subsystem Hazard Analysis (SSHA), System Hazard Analysis (SHA), Functional Hazard Analysis (FHA), System Level of Rigor Analysis, Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), Safety Assessment Report (SAR) and System Safety Risk Assessments, Failure Mode Effect Analysis (FMEA).

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Familiarity with 737-10 aircraft.
  • Working understanding of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) principles.
  • Experience with aircraft System Safety analysis guidelines such as MIL-STD-882E, ARP-4761, ARP-4754
  • Experience maintaining the Hazard Tracking System throughout the product life cycle.
  • Technical competency and skills with project management concepts/tools.
