Job Description


Senior Engineer – Micrositing will demonstrate accountability for functional and business objectives in the field of Wind Micro-siting covering methods for project-specific technical assessment of wind turbines. Integrate and develop processes, tools, and methods for the assessment of site wind conditions, wind turbine loads and turbine performance in support of New Unit sales. Establish and improve connections between global Application Engineering teams, and act as liaison on behalf of Customer Engineering team on technical matters with Design Engineering and Sales teams

This critical engineering role in the front end of the business helps us understand the operating environment for our turbines, assessing their production capability, mechanical loading, and proposing ways to add customer value.

In this role, you will:

  • Support new units proposals by performing Wind Resource, Annual Energy Production, Turbine Layout Optimization, noise propagation Assessments.
  • Translate measured wind conditions to wind resource characterizations and generate input conditions to Mechanical Loads Assessments; Perform Simple Mechanical Loads Analysis for new units proposals by assessing site specific loads.
  • Develop solutions to increase customer value and enable wind farm optimization;
  • Explore methods that utilize linear flow models, CFD, mesoscale and a combination to enable improved assessments of past and future site production and extended turbine life;
  • Identify, develop, evaluate, and introduce engineering solutions to meet near term and long range enhancement of quality and speed for customer feedback on wind project-specific wind turbine assessments
  • Enhance tools and processes for loads and performance assessment.  Help shape methodologies for the Digital Wind Farm pre- and post-construction related to loads analysis, performance assessment and incorporation of advanced control methods into those processes.
  • Use knowledge and expertise to market-winning proposals in anticipation of business product needs.
  • Provide technical guidance, direction and training to new and experienced engineers, specialists, technicians and co-ops or students.
  • Contribute to new and existing design practices
  • Track industry trends and R&D initiatives. Proactively implement trends and new ideas into our internal processes in collaboration with the global WRA team.
  • Foster metrics to maximize customer satisfaction & minimize resource consumption
  • Lead peer reviews. Provide coaching & mentorship in the team & business

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Engineering or Science (Civil or Mechanical or Aerospace, Atmospheric Science or related) from an accredited college or university
  • Minimum of 8 years of significant experience in Engineering/Technology
  • Minimum of 6 years of demonstrated experience working on Wind turbine dynamics or site suitability
  • Sound technical knowledge in Wind turbine system dynamics and aero-elastic simulation tools such as Simpack or FLEX5
  • Strong proficiency in English, with multi-lingual capacity
  • Ability and willingness to accept challenges outside of technical expertise / comfort zone
  • Self Motivated, Team player, with Demonstrated Creativity

Desired Characteristics

  • Experience in wind resource assessment, site screening and in the wind energy development process
  • Experience with WAsP, WAsP Engineering, OpenWind, WindPro (or equivalent wind flow modeling),mesoscale wind methods, Wind Turbine micro-siting, and wind farm design
  • Experience with layout design and optimization for wind farms
  • Ability to break-down complex issues, determine possible courses of action, and enable effective decision making
  • Programing skills: Python, matlab, etc
  • Experience providing technical support to sales, commercial and marketing functions.
  • Strong written, oral, & presentation skills
  • Global experience with proven ability to work with international teams
