The Senior Engineer/Technologist will lead programs on advanced characterization and testing for Pratt and Whitney R & D programs and work closely with University funded projects by PW.

This will involve characterization support and working with faculty and students of PW funded programs at IISc and IIT’s and Universities and liasioning with University projects.

The job will also include projects with global PW teams in the areas of advanced materials development, materials characterization, mechanical testing, Additive manufacturing, Thermal spray coatings, failure analysis of service returned parts, materials modelling and support to qualification of global and local suppliers in manufacturing, and to set processes to qualify and certify suppliers for PW parts.

In addition the Senior engineer will,

- Carry out advanced metallurgical characterization for different types of ongoing developmental projects with global PW-A, PW-C, Global services engineering and Collins Aerospace teams

- Be responsible for setting up and running advanced characterization equipment related to microscopy and X-ray Diffraction, such as the Field Emission Scanning electron microscope and

related accessories, such as the EDAX, EBSD, Heating stage, X-ray diffraction, corrosion, mechanical testing and furnaces, for various projects related to Materials engineering

-Characterization support for New Materials, Coatings, Additive Manufacturing, Joining, Brazing . developmental activities

- Establish structure-property correlations related to new alloys via Additive manufacturing

- Evaluate root cause analysis via different mechanical testing

- Modeling and experimental support for various aspects of assessment of structural integrity, such as creep, fatigue, corrosion of gas turbine and allied aspects

- Develop small scale mechanical testing techniques

-Customer service activities such as debris and fuel analysis, failure analysis specific to the region such as destructive metallurgical analysis of hardware

- Review and support Specifications pertaining to manufacturing of parts for PW

- Ability to work with Global teams in materials and process engineering, and support to global research and development centers and provide technical leadership

- Document technical data generated by the assigned project consistent with engineering policies and procedures

- Participate as a presenter or reviewer in technical and program reviews

- Assure proper documentation of technical data generated for the assigned projects and/or tasks consistent with engineering policies and procedures

Qualifications/Requirements

- PhD in Materials Engineering / Metallurgy / Mechanical engineering / Manufacturing with strong expertise in Advanced Materials characterization / Mechanical Testing

Or

- M.Tech in Materials Science / Metallurgical Engineering / Mechanical engineering or related discipline with 10-12 years R&D experience in advanced materials technologies

- At least 5 years’ experience in hands on advanced materials characterization including X-ray and electron microscopy, preferably having working knowledge in relevant industry

- Experience in leading programs involving materials characterization, gas turbine failure analysis, casting, forging and welding

- Experience dealing with Aviation or power generation systems and hardware

- Expertise in Advanced Material Characterization techniques including electron microscopy

- Excellent knowledge of Metallurgy, especially physical metallurgy

- Excellent presentation and communication skills

Desired Characteristics

- Ph.D. in Materials Science / Metallurgy with strong expertise in advanced material characterization

- Strong fundamentals and expertise in microscopy

- Expertise in FEM and Materials simulations such as casting, forging and welding modeling /materials modeling

- Strong fundamental understanding of welding, brazing, coating, machining, casting, additive manufacturing

- Strong fundamental understanding of damage evolution in Ni based Superalloys and steel including their manufacturing processes
