Job Description

The Assembly, Finish and Add-on department is a part of the blade module in Vestas and is accountable for robust and repeatable processes within blade assembly, blade finish & painting and add-ons for all on- and offshore blades. Furthermore, the department is involved in new blade technology projects and is supporting internal and external blades manufacturing factories. The team consists of +30 motivated team members located in Lem (Denmark), Isle of Wight (UK), Chennai (India) and in Porto (Portugal).

Our role is to design the blade components in a way that ensures easy, repeatable, and robust manufacturing for our production units to deliver the highest quality and at the same time being cost efficient. We are accountable for delivering and maintaining the processes around blade assembly, blade finish & paint and design of blade add-ons. This includes among other things intensive work with PFMEA, process validations, manufacturing requirement specifications, as well as CATIA models and blade drawings. Our job is to provide clear, unambiguous communication of the design and process intent to our manufacturing colleagues and empowering them to optimize their manufacturing process and tools within the given constraints. We are a team of 'Do'ers' that make things happen, but at the same time ensure the highest quality within our blade manufacturing processes. As member of this department, you will quickly see the results of your endeavors, as within months they materialize in products & components being manufactured within our global manufacturing footprint.

This is an exciting position involving travel to Vestas blades manufacturing facilities around the world and work on existing products but also participating in development projects for the wind turbine blades of the future.

Responsibilities

  • You will be working closely with other departments within Vestas, such as blade structures, protective functions (lightning and de-icing system), blade materials, shell and web manufacturing, blade tools, blade factories, etc. to ensure manufacturability across the blade design and manufacturing value chain
  • Ensure that all new on- and offshore blades can meet the manufacturing process requirements before handover to Vestas manufacturing units. This requires you to be on the shopfloor in our blade pilot manufacturing facility in Lem, Denmark and be supervising the production team to ensure we arrive at the right quality
  • Ensure that blade process documentation like PFMEA's, process validations and process specification for new and existing blades are created and maintained
  • Ensure flow-down of CTQs (Critical to Quality) requirements from product level into design and process documentation
  • Ensure that blade manufacturing processes are aligning with our CATIA models and drawings
  • Collect Voice of Customer from production and other stakeholders to develop, down-select and de-risk blade manufacturing concepts
  • Drive changes through our Change Management system
  • Prepare, evaluate and implement methods, processes, and techniques that improve process performance, reliability, and maintainability for the Vestas blades whilst keeping focus on health and safety, quality and cost
  • Verify and test new blade manufacturing concepts in laboratory environments and subscale production environment
  • Work closely together with other departments to ensure committed and robust manufacturing processes

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's / Master's graduate in Mechanical, Chemical, Aerospace or Production engineering (or similar)
  • Practical knowledge and experience within composite manufacturing, gluing processes, assembly of large components, coating & spray painting, etc.
  • Should have several years of practical experience within blade design and manufacturing and have good understanding of the link between manufacturing and tools
  • Experience with thermoset resin systems such as epoxy or polyurethane chemistry
  • Should have experience with NDT methods such as thermography, ultrasonic testing or shearography
  • Experience with running optimization and process development projects in manufacturing environments
  • Experience with experimental design, planning, data analysis and treatment of statistical data and tolerance analysis (preferable Six Sigma knowledge)
