Changes in the Aviation Industry during the Second World War

The Second World War was a global war that lasted from 1939 to 1945. The war costed many lives and changed the world scenario completely. The small nations showed that the size of the territory did not matter only the intensity and desire for revenge mattered. The small countries took to the skies immediately and introduced new technologies in the aviation industry.

The German and Japanese Aviation companies introduced many new technologies, these countries took the help of technology to take revenge on the big nations like the USA, Great Britain, USSR etc. The technologies that were introduced became the turning point for the Aviation industry and are still in use for commercial Aviation. This WW2 proved to be a discovery era for the Aviation industry. So, let us take a look at the major sectors in aviation that changed considerably.

Avionics

The avionics department was greatly improved during the WW2 era. The introduction of new types of RaDAR and radio technology improved the communication between ground and air. The discovery of radio altimeters and secondary Radar changed the complete war scenario. The secondary RaDAR helped in the detection of enemy flights and defeated the large nations in many battles. The improvement of communications made easy flights. Therefore Avionics sector saw some of the most important changes.

Training

The introduction of new aircraft in the military demanded new and more expert pilots. New training methods and advanced technologies inducted new methods. The demand for trained pilots introduced new concepts like human factors, new legislation etc. Practice training, hours rating and license for pilots . the new technologies demanded new maintenance methods and proper training for maintenance was provided by the German and Japanese farms.

Manufacturing

The tendency to become victorious lead to the development of new aircraft especially bomber aircraft. The traditional wooden aircraft were replaced with heat-treated aluminium Aircraft. The air fighters were produced in large numbers with greater ammunition carrying capabilities. The manufacturers started designing cantilevered wings, the biplane configuration was rejected for further battle use. Similarly, many new designs were manufactured during the second world war.

Powerplant

During the first world war, most aircraft had two or three stroke engines. During the Second World war, four-stroke engines were produced in large numbers. The powerplant was now designed in a sophisticated way so that during battle no harm takes place easily. This enhanced most technologies which lead to the discovery of Jet engines.

                                                                       powerplant | Source: pixabay

The second world war changed many things in the world and it can be said that a new era was started with modern discovery and science. The loss of million lives lead to the discovery of many new technologies and theories. Therefore the war changed the aviation industry in many aspects. This is what the history of aviation says.
