Air Traffic controllers are of the most responsible jobs in the aviation industry. The safety of an Airport and Aircraft depends highly on the Air traffic controllers(ATC). Air traffic control specialists abbreviated ATCS, are personnel responsible for the safe, orderly, and expeditious flow of air traffic in the global air traffic control system. What is an Air traffic controller ?

I know that it has been defined previously but let me tell it to you in layman’s language. Air traffic controllers are responsible for the separation and efficient movement of aircraft and vehicles operating on the taxiways and runways of the airport itself The ATCs are responsible for the safety of the aircraft and airport. It guides the aircraft for landing and approach; also helps the aircraft pilot for proper flight, Altitude, guidance from air traffic; in short the Air Traffic Controllers helps in avoiding collisions in air space.

The whole operation of flight control is carried out in a control tower located inside an airport. The control tower is further divided into two air control and ground traffic control.

Responsibilities on an Air Traffic Controller

  • Monitoring and regulating ground and air traffic.
  • Providing useful information related to weather, wind, flight paths, possible delays, and runway openings and closures.
  • Maintaining communication with other air traffic control centers, pilots, and airport staff members to ensure safety, relate estimated arrival times, and prevent or respond to emergency situations.
  • Inspecting, repairing and utilizing maps, reports, radios, telephones, computers, radar, and other technologies to monitor, analyze, and adapt to changes in conditions.
  • Alerting response teams in the event of safety concerns or emergencies.
  • Assisting in searches for missing aircraft.
  • Compiling and analyzing data and reports to develop more effective flight plans and prevent delays.

Eligibility to be an Air Traffic Controller

Airports Authority of India(AAI) releases the notification for the recruitment of ATCs. The eligibility criteria mentioned there is graduate with maths and physics at least in 1 semester. Preference will be given to candidates who have completed their graduation from an aviation background. Well, if are an aviation graduate with like BSc. Aviation, BSc. Aircraft Maintenance, etc., then you can apply for ATC.

How to be an Air Traffic Controller ?

To be an ATC you have to go through three stages; written test, technical test, and medical test. The Written Test will be based on the graduation level. In the technical stage, you may be given sentences related to Air Traffic Controlling to read. This is done to test your voice or narration or to know whether the candidate is stammering. In the final stage, a medical examination is done and then the candidate qualifies to be an ATC. The standards for medical examination is generally provided in the notification.
