The Effects of COVID-19 on the Aviation Industry

There’s no doubt that the Aviation Industry is one of the hardest-hit industries out there in the world due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. Several jobs were lost and all the airplanes were grounded due to the pandemic. As we reach 2022 we see a great recovery in aviation and we’re about to reach pre-pandemic levels by the beginning of the next year.

ICAO on COVID-19:

ICAO is taking pandemic very strictly and is working with WHO to make air travel safer and get back to normalcy by next year. We saw relaxations being made by various states and countries in regard to guidelines published by them. Every country should have a national aviation plan. Every country should follow the Guidance provided by ICAO and preparedness guidance available from the WHO.

The travelling public at large should practice good standard hygiene practices. Such practices include covering your mouth and nose while coughing or sneezing, thoroughly and regularly washing your hands with soap and water or alcoholic hand rub. ICAO standards dictate that aircraft must be equipped with a universal precaution kit for the use of cabin crew members in managing incidents of ill health associated with a case of suspected communicable disease and that crew are suitably trained in the use of these kits. Thus, cabin crew have the tools and training necessary to ensure the prevention of infection while travelling.

Aircraft cabins have highly effective HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) filter systems that remove airborne virus particles. Aircraft are disinfected between flights if needed in accordance with ICAO standards. Procedures have been implemented to mitigate the spread of disease during air travel. Therefore the current likelihood of contracting the virus while on flights is extremely low.

IATA on COVID-19 :

According to publications and reports by IATA we see that Air cargo is historically high and air travel is improving. The Domestic Market is showing a wide range of outcomes where Russia’s domestic market remains the strongest performer. International travel is yet to recover as cross-border travel restrictions remain the key driver. Flight schedules are on the rise despite Omicron although a number of airlines announced cuts to their schedules. Both international and domestic flight booking are on the rise. According to reports, the impact of travel restrictions on the global cases is still unclear and travel restrictions remained the same all over the world, there was a huge variation in covid-19 cases all over the world.

The PowerPoint presentation published by IATA will give you a clear picture of the same.

WHO on COVID-19 and Aviation :

The pandemic is having a large-scale impact on international travel and trade, particularly in the aviation sector. WHO is conducting systematic reviews of the scientific literature and assessing high-quality data in grey literature on the effectiveness, safety, and potential harms of various public health mitigation measures for SARS-CoV-2 transmission implemented before, during, and after air travel, including at points of entry. The resulting knowledge products will be published as a series of scientific briefs or interim guidance documents as applicable. (Source).

Air bubble agreement (India) :

“Transport Bubbles” or “Air Travel Arrangements” are temporary arrangements between two countries aimed at restarting commercial passenger services when regular international flights are suspended as a result of the pandemic. They are reciprocal in nature, meaning airlines from both countries enjoy similar benefits.
