War effects on World’s Defence Industry

We all are familiar with what war does? No matter who initiates it, destruction is on both sides and to the world. The war has not stopped and yet we see its consequences with a drastic increase in gas prices. The entire world’s economy is affected. In this article, let us see how the Russia-Ukraine war has affected the overall defence/aerospace industries throughout the world.

Effects on Indian defence

India imports enormous military equipment which due to war still remains unaffected. One reason is a good partnership with the Russians. Russia is India’s largest defence partner where we have imported aircrafts such as MiG; Sukhoi, and missiles along with other military equipment.

Few deliverables along with some mutual contracts might delay due to the sanctions imposed and the nation’s personal interests. However, this can be slightly disadvantageous. Apart from that, Russia still remains India’s military partner. Even if so, with an expansion and growth of aerospace startup companies in India, we are surely hoping to have our own military equipment in future.

With ‘make in India’, we have to take a stand for our country’s progress and bring up many more defence and aerospace start-ups which can make our country better equipped, ready and much more independent.

Effects of war on European defence Industries

Although Europe has their own military equipment and aircrafts such as Dassault Mirage and Rafale which are imported to India as well. Europe still lacks in defence research and innovation. They are at present very much dependent on the United States of America.

The Russia-Ukraine war is a wake-up call for the Europeans to strengthen their defence sectors. Therefore, the Europeans are at present in ties with the USA for defence growth. According to the article ‘A European Defence Industry? Going Beyond Sovereignty’ by Finabel states that Europe spends around 200 billion Euros for their defence but is only 12% efficient as compared to the American military supplies.

USA’s Momentum in Defence

With the USA being the world’s top economic country with an overall GDP of 22.9 trillion USD, it also is the top one in military ranking. USA along with NATO has been expanding vastly not just in the west but also in the east. One reason for the Russia-Ukraine war to be initiated directly or indirectly was NATO. The USA has a number of defence industries where it manufactures and invests. They also have military research laboratories installed around the world that help research, design, and develop new military equipment. These military components are not just used by the US army but are sold to other countries.

The war is not just about the destruction of people and the environment but also about making money. As discussed previously, Europe has woken up to the war situation and is importing military equipment from the US. This will not stop anytime soon because now looking at the sequence of events, Europe wants to build its military and make it as strong as possible. For this, their primary partner is the USA with whom they will build more strategies on how they can expand this market.

Not just the European countries, but other small countries have also been alarmed and are ready to build their militaries which requires the aid of well-experienced defence masters. Also, the US is helping Ukraine by supplying anti-armour, stinger missiles which involve a great deal of money exchange. In brief, the USA is definitely making profits out of this war.

Writing this article is making me realize that our future will look dead serious and destructive because every country wants to be equipped. This might lead to unnecessary wars or even accidents. I hope we can come to peaceful resolutions and help each other build and share love and not just missiles.
