Communication skill is the most essential skill needed in the aviation industry. This skill is needed in every branch of aviation starting from pilots, cabin crew, maintenance technicians, baggage handlers, etc. Also, it is a myth that aviation professionals are good at communication skills.

So if you are an aviation enthusiast then you better avoid the attitude: “I am not good at communication”. Starting from the pinnacle, a pilot should be good at communicating with the air traffic controllers for compliance with safety. Now, everyone knows that English is the language used for communication in the aviation industry.

Communication is the most important medium to understand one another. But the way we communicate with other people may vary based on the environment we are in. Communication is much more than just talking. It assumes an exchange of information that is clear, accurate, and understood correctly by both parties. In the hectic environment frequently experienced in a busy airport. This is not always as straightforward as may be thought.

If you have studied human factors then you will know how communication skill helps for better work performance. Suppose you are working in an environment and you are not feeling suitable for working in the environment, in this case, lack of communication with your peers will degrade your working performance.

As for AMEs are concerned at the point of shift change, the need for effective communication between the outgoing and incoming personnel in maintenance is extremely important. The absence of such effective communication has been evident in many accident reports from various industries, not just aircraft maintenance.

Safety and Aviation communication

The major importance of communication skills in aviation is to increase the level of safety and reduce accidents that could be prevented. While landing an Aircraft, a pilot has to be extremely cautious and follow every instruction given by the ground controllers. So at all times, the aircraft has to feed the ground controllers with all the information and system changes that take place to help maintain the aircraft safety.

Well, there is an interesting observation I have made. People often watch a Hollywood movie dubbed. It is recommended that watching a film in English will not only help you in understanding it but also you will get to learn the accent in which it is spoken. Learning effective communication skills is a straightforward process that allows you to express yourself and improve both your personal and professional relationships.

Clear communication starts with active listening. If you’re just focused on how you are expressing yourself, chances are you are not listening or reacting to what others are bringing to the table. In addition to verbal messages, effective communication relies on nonverbal cues. Developing an awareness of your body language and tone of voice will improve your messaging and presentation skills.

There’s no shame in asking for honest feedback on your communication skills from colleagues. Asking your peers or subordinates for their advice on improving your communication skills can help you better understand how you are coming across in your work environment. Public speaking may sound daunting, but there’s no better way to develop good communication skills than by seeking out public speaking opportunities. It is a personal experience of mine – when you start communicating with various people, it gives a boost to your self-confidence.
